Event description
This online interactive talk, presented by Juhi Sharma, founder of Vamika, takes audiences on an engaging journey into the world of Kabeliya embroidery, spotlighting its historical importance and present-day hurdles. Led by experts and Kabeliya community members, the discussion starts with an introduction to the community's cultural legacy, known for its association with snake charming, particularly in North India's concentrated areas. Despite residing in makeshift camps and facing livelihood challenges due to the decline of nomadism, Kabeliya women have preserved their remarkable craft of layered quilting with intricate embroidery.
Delving into the techniques and symbolic significance of Kabeliya embroidery, deeply tied to the community's lifestyle and surroundings, Juhi will also address the urgent need to safeguard this endangered art form, exploring the factors contributing to its decline and ongoing preservation efforts.
Participants are encouraged to reflect on the importance of preserving cultural heritage and to support initiatives like Vamika. This endeavour, spearheaded by Juhi Sharma, seeks to empower Kabeliya women by revitalizing their neglected craft skills, thus improving their prospects for sustainable livelihoods.
Vamika will also be running an online Kabeliya Embroidery workshop on Saturday 16 November 2024. To book your spot, visit our website HERE.
