SUSI BELLAMY: HAND MARBLING

Susi Bellamy creates vibrant interior fabrics and wallpapers, home and fashion accessories  based on her original artwork painted in her studio and her hand-marbled paper designs.  New for autumn are marbled velvet cushions, decorative box files, decadent velvet  pouches and in time for Christmas, exquisite, scented candles in boxes covered in her  Plumes marbled papers. 



After living in Florence and finding endless delight in the traditional Florentine art of marbling, Susi Bellamy set out to learn the craft and create her own marbled designs.  On her return to the UK she signed up at the renowned West Dean College in Chichester and immersed herself in learning the creative process of this ancient art, honing her skills and developing her own unique style. 

Susi explains:
"I really enjoy editing and cropping my own papers, just as I have always done with my original artwork to create what I think is a pleasing design.  The fun is in the original making and nothing beats the ‘pulling’ of the paper once the design has transferred from the surface of the size to the paper."



Susi makes her hand-made marbled designs in her studio in the North East of England, using traditional techniques, natural agents and her own artistry to create her signature swirling multi-hued patterns in marbling trays and transferring them on to paper.  Susi then edits her designs and chooses only her favourite patterns to be reproduced for her collection of fabrics.

"Before I lived in Florence, I used to spend a large chunk of my wages on buying large marbled photo albums from Liberty.  I still have them but I never imagined at that time when I was working as a Fashion Editor that in my future life I would have created my own patterns let alone made a home collection celebrating everything I loved!"


Liberty London, where her journey with marbling began, now stocks Susi’s exquisite range of marbled velvet cushions. The most popular design in her collection is a Bouquet pattern, but Feathered, Malachite and comb patterns are also included.  Scale is important as well as colour balance and with her ex-Fashion Editor’s eye for colour, Susi works with colour stories in mind to create her beautiful collection of marbled fabrics, cushions, box files, and beautifully boxed scented candles all in her joyously colourful hand-crafted marbled designs.
