In Full Bloom: Petra Börner x Marimekko
Petra Börner, the award-winning Swedish-born, London-based artist, brings her signature bold, organic forms to Marimekko’s latest Artist Series collaboration. Known for her dynamic floral motifs and intuitive approach to material and technique, Börner’s work bursts with the kind of movement and vitality that make her a natural fit for Marimekko’s printmaking legacy. This dynamic partnership transforms her vivid sketches into a collection of homeware and fashion, marking the fourth instalment of the Marimekko Artist Series.
For over seventy years, Marimekko has championed printmaking, inviting established and emerging artists to push the creative boundaries of textile design. Börner’s designs, rooted in a fascination with natural forms, celebrate the energy of growth and transformation in eight distinctive patterns that explore the lifecycle of flowers from the first buds of spring to autumn’s fading blooms.
The apparel collection features Eldfamn and Baluns, prints alive with passionate lines and warm, dynamic hues. In homeware, the Vildstjälk print reveals a layered explosion of colour that injects bold vitality into Marimekko’s tableware and textiles, while the elegant Kraftmo, a minimalist black ink design, and Pistilla, a motif symbolising femininity and hope, bring a sense of refined balance.
Transforming Börner’s free-flowing sketches into seamless textile prints required a masterful blend of artistry and precision. Marimekko’s studio worked closely with the artist, designers, and printing experts to adapt her organic forms into perfectly repeating patterns. Screen printing played a key role in achieving the vivid, layered effects of her work. Each screen was meticulously crafted to ensure flawless colour alignment, while artisans fine-tuned the printing process to maintain consistency across different fabrics. Marimekko’s flatbed printing machines pushed the limits of traditional textile printing, ensuring every shade and detail came to life with clarity and depth.
Beyond textiles, the collaboration extended into new creative territories. A highlight of the collection is a serving dish featuring the Vildmo design - an innovative piece for which Börner herself carved the mould, blending her background in sculpture with Marimekko’s expertise in homeware design.
Arriving just in time for spring, the collection offers wearable art and vibrant home accents, from breezy party dresses in mini, midi, and maxi lengths to bold statement pieces for interiors. This inspired fusion of craft and creativity celebrates Marimekko’s enduring passion for artistic collaboration and the boundless potential of printmaking.
