Teachers and textile makers combine skills to create lessons in numeracy
Three of Scotland’s most talented textile designers are working with primary school teachers from Dundee this term to create new craft-based approaches to teaching numeracy in schools.
The teachers and textile designers have been attending residencies at Verdant Works, and the Knit Shop owned by fashion designer Donna Wilson, to develop lesson plans for classroom teaching later in the year. The residencies are part of MAKE with the Knit Shop – a two year teacher development programme for primary 5 and 6 teachers from Ancrum Road, Claypotts Castle, Fintry, Rosebank, St Mary’s, and Downfield schools in Dundee, supported by Paul Hamlyn Foundation’s Teacher Development Fund.
Over the next two school years, these three textile makers will support the teachers through equipping them with craft-making skills, and sharing their ideas for delivering effective craft-based learning in the classroom. This will include design exercises used to consider connections between craft and numeracy, craft activities to support cross-curricular learning, and conversations in the classroom around identity, cultural heritage and sustainability.
