12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS: CLARISSA HULSE
The Selvedge 12 Days of Christmas 2021 prize draws are open! From 1 - 12 December you can enter for a chance of winning one of our 12 prizes. Every day while entries are open we will look at each prize in more detail, and today we're taking a look at the beautiful textile designs of Clarissa Hulse.
Clarissa designs beautiful and luxurious home accessories and gift items from her studio in North London, with an emphasis on botanical imagery and bold colour. Her designs are based on her nature photography and plants she collects, from as far reaching places as tropical rainforest, Wiltshire meadows or even leaves from trees in Highbury Fields which is a stone's throw from her studio.
Clarissa’s work has been influenced by her childhood which was spent in many beautiful countries as she and her family travelled with her diplomat father to places including Bangkok, Athens, Berne, and Vienna. Clarissa explains; “Each time we moved, my mother would make our new house feel homely with beautiful textiles and handicrafts from local markets. She was also a bit plant mad and would fill the house with plants which I think has really influenced my work”.
After attending Brighton Art College in the 90s and then working as a freelance textile designer initially specialising in beautiful scarves and clothing, Clarissa decided to focus on creating items for the home in 2002. Now a multiple award winning textile designer, her collections have appeared in some of the top high street stores and she has collaborated with many world famous brands including Sanderson & John Lewis. Clarissa’s current range includes bedlinen, cushions, lightshades, fabric, wallpaper and gift ideas such as soaps jigsaws & stationery all in her signature bright botanicals and graphic prints.
