12 Days of Christmas: Louisa Loakes

Every day while entries are open we will look at each prize in more detail. Today it’s the large Saffron Spot cushion worth £195 from Louisa Loakes. Louisa Loakes hand block prints her textiles in her studio in Peckham, London. Her block printed designs are recognizable by their simple use of geometric form, sparse colour pallet along with a signature dash of hand-painted colour.

Since studying Fine Art Painting at Wimbledon School of Art, Louisa’s work as an artist has been a cross over between her abstract paintings and textiles. Block printing has been the focus of her work for many years; she is particularly drawn to traditional Indian printing techniques and the Saffron Spot pattern was designed after a trip to Northern India. The process of printing with a block is entwined with her love for line, pattern and abstraction. Louisa hosts regular block printing workshops in her home/studio and more recently online. Her workshops welcome beginners to block printing and have a creative approach to pattern. All her textiles are available to order per metre. We have a large Saffron Spot cushion to give away worth £195. The cushion is hand block printed and hand painted with a brush stroke of burnt orange onto 100% linen. It is filled with a soft feather cushion and measures 75cm x 50cm.
