At the Seams: A Political History of Palestinian Embroidery
"Politics is an expression of the self," from one of the online videos accompanying the At the Seams exhibition, it is clear that the topic of embroidery from 1948 onwards truly is "tactile, intimate, laborious and political."
For many Palestinian women embroidery has played a vital role in their lives as a physical independent practice, form of communication and a way of providing a sense of self.
Accompanied by contextual photographs, paintings and contemporary designs, this exhibition, along with the short videos that accompany it – and are well worth watching – is a worthy exploration into the significance of embroidery and personal textile practices.
