Chantal Joffe
You may feel like you've seen Chantal Joffe's paintings before. Her, often female, stylistic subjects are somehow simultaneously immature and ultra-adult. Both reminiscent of a child's imagining and a 'serious' 19th century portrait.
You may also have actually seen them before. They're a go-to contemporary cover for books such as The Feminine Mystique or The Pumpkin Eater. Hardly surprising given the female turmoil they so eloquently communicate coupled with the feeling that these images might be based on a long-remembered image in a magazine from the same period over the above publications.
