Ensamble Artesano
We're pleased to welcome Ensamble Artesano as they feature on the Selvedge Instagram page in the second of our regular Tuesday Takeovers. Follow Selvedge on Instagram using the handle @SelvedgeMagazine to find out more about the project.
Ensamble Artesano is a collaborative social entrepreneurship platform for the economic reactivation of the artisan sector in Mexico which has been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The main objective is to strengthen the work and artisan activity of women and men who were affected by the economic uncertainty after lockdown and social distancing restrictions were implemented in Mexico.
Thanks to the generosity of foundations and organizations raising funds to reactivate and promote artisan production in Mexico, Ensamble Artesano — in collaboration with 36 Allied Organizations that work formally with artisan groups — were able to finance the production of a limited edition collection.
The result of this collaborative effort was a collection of 15 thousand pieces made using 16 traditional techniques such as waist loom, natural fibers, lacquers, wood, pedal loom, metalwork, pottery and ceramics, stone and lapidary, paper, seeds, beads, weaving and hammock embroidery. The limited edition work of over 2,700 artisans from 18 states across Mexico can be viewed on the Ensamble Artesano online store — created to revive the participating groups and strengthen the artisan sector.
The Ensamble Artesano team seek to increase awareness of the local economy and fair trade in order to preserve the rich culture of artisanship in Mexico and provide a sustainable income for the families that conserve the traditions of its 18 states.
This non-profit initiative was created by Fundación Haciendas del Mundo Maya and Taller Maya, developed in partnership with México Territorio Creativo, Design Week Mexico, Caralarga and Estafeta, with the advice of Igeneris and the United Nations Development Program in Mexico (UNDP).
