Five Minutes with a Friend: Arctic Summer Atelier
A new stockist of Selvedge, Arctic Summer Atelier based in Uppsala, Sweden, talks to us about its community, collection and ethos. Inspired by the nature that surrounds it, darkness and light, the high contrast of the summer and winter seasons experienced in the North.
In its latest collection, the brand explores the contrasts of dry and lush, through Kenya's warm climate.
Ever taking inspiration from nature and driven by the belief that all beauty can be found in nature, the Arctic Summer brand hopes to bring fashionable garments to consumers who share a love for our Earth, in its ever-changing beauty.
Can you tell us a bit about you and your shop?
Our shop is situated at the heart of Stockholm, close to the water. The nature that surrounds serves as a key element to our design aesthetic. I started Arctic Summer with a hope for creative freedom combined with simple luxury. We continue to work from nature / with nature in all that we do.
Apart from Selvedge, what else do you sell?
You will find paintings, interior details and books and magazines, such as POETRY and The Lissome among our products. Our main creations are the dresses and other pieces of clothing that are designed, dyed and hand-crafted at our atelier.
Can you tell us a bit about your neighbourhood /community? Why is it so special?
The community we are part of serves as a key element of why we do what we do. There is a sincerity and a hopeful resonance among our community members that allows us to keep working for a fashion evolution that includes and benefits people and planet. The way forward is to join together and to stay focused while staying playful, keeping the fun alive.
What has inspired you recently?
Lately, I have been listening to music by Nick Mulvey. I continue to be inspired by designers such as Yamamoto and have recently discovered a photographer called Yamamoto Matao. There is a simplicity in his works that strips bare the elements, leaving only what is essential.
Can you tell us something about one of your loyal customers?
There is a quirkiness and an innocence about our customers. It is heartwarming to think of the ones that have visited our atelier and I continue to be humbled by the work that I do, each meeting unique.
