Good Company
It was dark, cold, mid-week in January (and there was a bus strike) but last night, gathered inside the beautiful Contemporary Applied Arts Gallery, everything felt warm and bright. One of Selvedge's New Year resolutions is to draw the threads of the magazine together and create a more integrated community. So our small gathering to mark the publication of Issue 62 got the year off to an excellent start.
Generously hosted by the lovely team at Contemporary Applied Arts (CAA) it was an opportunity to view the work of one of this issue's featured makers, tapestry weaver Fiona Rutherford, and a chance to revisit Shellie Holden's work. Her careful reconstruction of an Alaskan Parka, shown in Issue 61, was on show in the gallery window. And talking of windows - shopping was also on the agenda. We doubt anyone left without an addition or two to their wish list. The CAA is a registered charity and membership organisation that champions British craft and represents 300 new and established makers. The gallery is filled with carefully curated pieces from stunning hand blown pendant lights by Michael Ruh to Katie Mawson's colourful knits.
But above all this event was about saying thank you to everyone who makes the magazine possible – our talented contributors who fill the pages with their writing, illustrations and photography, the Selvedge team and, possibly the most vital group, the readers who support us by buying the magazine or subscribing. We hope it will be the first of many so if you would like to be included on our next guest list please email your name and telephone number to Emma at promotions@selvedge.org.
