MALEZA HATMAKERS, BARRIO LAS LETRAS
When buying a bespoke hat, MALEZA Hatmakers, by appointment only, in Barrio Las Letras is the place to go.
The importance of telling stories in an alternative way drives Myrte Sara Huyts and Javier Reta, the founders of MALEZA hatmakers. In their workshop in Madrid (appointment only) they create limited editions, bespoke, and one-of-a-kind genderless hats in felt and vegetable fibres. They are known for the use of upcycled felt and dead stock to create (part of) their pieces.
Trying to imitate nature in the irregularity of its appearance their distinct textures are an open invitation to the tactile sense. Thanks to natural dyes and artisanal processes, they are able to colour their material in deep, desaturated tones.
MALEZA embraces the unknown and the impossibility of predicting the outcome. For them this is key to finding a more honest and raw way to reveal the imperfectness and unexpected results of the human hand.
Each hat is hand-formed by Myrte and Javier, from start to finish in their workshop. All MALEZA pieces bear the fingerprints of their Dutch-Spanish roots and the trace of the century-old tools that they work with. Marcella Echavarria
