Margo Selby's Turner Lecture
British textile artist Margo Selby gave the Turner Lecture on 9 June 2021 – attended by weavers, artists, scientists and the general public from across the world via Zoom. For those of you who missed it, or would like to listen again, the Colour Group (GB) and Margo Selby Studio have made the recording available online.
The Colour Group (GB), founded in 1940, is an interdisciplinary society that draws together people interested in all aspects of colour – its perception, measurement, reproduction and artistic expression. Every two years the Colour Group (GB) invites a distinguished artist or art historian to give the Turner Lecture, and a sterling silver medal is awarded to mark the occasion; this alternates with the Newton Medal for colour science.
In her lecture, Margo talks about her inspirations and influences, her personal approach to colour and how colour and structure unite in woven fabric. Colour is absolutely central to all of Margo’s work in textiles art and design – the effects of colour in a pattern – the relationship between colour and woven thread – and the physical impact of colour upon her. Hear Margo describe her processes and the thinking behind her use of colour, and see examples of her work from across a twenty-year career.
Margo’s lecture took place online, 9 June 2021, from her studio in Whitstable, and is available to watch now for free (below) or on Vimeo by following this link: Weaving In Colour, Margo Selby's Turner Lecture
For Issue 101 Grow, every new subscription comes with a colourful, complimentary Margo Selby wash bag, made from her signature fabric. The wash bags are made using a combination of fibres, and a complex double cloth construction that gives the fabric a subtle, three-dimensional surface. The weave structure creates a texture that is interesting to the hand and the eye. The bag is durable enough for everyday use and is finished with a water resistant lining with internal compartments.
