Monument of Stitches
In 2015 Isabel Berglund created Monument of Stitches together with 650 local knitters in Denmark, demonstrating her ability as an artist to create works of art with hundreds of participants knitting according to a concept she has developed.
The result was a series of monumental artworks where Isabel Berglund's aesthetically unified whole met the individual knitted contributions of the participants on equal terms. Monument of Stitches was a public participation project in 2015 involving 650 knitters from local communities in six cities in a region of Denmark known locally as 'The Triangle'. The artworks were created in workshops traversing the six cities, where locals knit for the people in the neighbouring city like a relay.
On the one hand the project and works themselves were focussed on the process, where people in a community embraced the diversity of the local environment created an artwork. But on the other hand, there was a focus on the final product: six striking and powerful sculptural structures that intervened in the familiar cityscape. The process and product were two equally central aspects of the artwork. Isabel Berglund created the framework for the completed works: the materials, colours and rules for each contribution, then invtied each individual participant ot contribute with their own expressive style.
