Of Salt and Spirit: Black Quilters in the American South
On view from 16 November 2024 – 13 April 2025, Of Salt and Spirit celebrates the artistry of Black quilters from the American South. Over the past two decades, Mississippi Museum of Art has built one of the largest quilt collections in this region, and this exhibition features over 50 exquisite handmade and machine-stitched quilts from MMA’s permanent collection. Highlights include pieces by Crossroads Quilters, Gwendolyn Magee, and quilts collected by American photographer Roland L. Freeman, acquired by Mississippi Museum of Art in 2022.
Curated by Dr. Sharbreon Plummer, this exhibition combines in-depth research, innovative interpretation, and community engagement to present American art through a Black feminist lens.
