On Pointe
The beauty of the ballet has always seduced artists and photographers but capturing the grit and determination that underpins the prettiest performance requires them to look beneath the silk and sequins. Like Degas, Leeds-based photographer, Justin Slee, has found inspiration behind the scenes.
Over the last few years Northern Ballet granted Justin privileged access to rehearsals in the Company’s home in Leeds, allowing him to observe their work and witness the commitment behind outstanding ballets. He explains, "I wanted to capture moments rather than positions and try to reflect the incredibly hard work that goes into creating beautiful performances… For me it was less about what you can see from the auditorium, and more about the human aspect,"
Justin's project is now the subject of an exhibition at The Gallery at Munro House. Avant comprises 60 images ranging from Northern Ballet dancers preparing to go on stage, to wardrobe fittings and morning class.
