Piecing Together

In October and November we are running workshops that will equip you with the skills to start your first abstract quilt, with lessons in piecing together a quilt top from two different artists. In October, Julius Arthur of House of Quinn will guide you through a creative approach to appliqué and textiles collage so that you can create your own quilted wall hanging. And in December, Coulter Fussell will teach how to create a two-tone 60” x 60” quilt top from discarded textiles. You may later baste, back, hand quilt, and bind this top for a completed work.

Coulter Fussell is an Artist and Quilter based in Water Valley, Mississippi where she runs an experimental textile studio, producing boundary pushing quilt-works using old, discarded and donated textiles as her sole materials. Taught to quilt by her mother, Coulter relies on the painterly quality inherent in used textiles to bring depth and character to her work. From T-shirts to fine silks, no fabric is valued above another. If the fabric was connected to a human life then it is as sacred as the next. Walking a compositional balance, Coulter uses the standardised and purposeful restraint of quilt patterning to self edit what would otherwise be a full and total leap into expressionistic abstraction.
