SELVEDGE AT LONDON DESIGN FAIR
Bringing together two British design-led companies at the London Design Fair in September, we are pleased to announce that the team behind Selvedge will unveil a major new art installation that champions sustainability and natural products.
We’ve teamed up with furniture designer and manufacturer ercol, and start-up Solidwool to showcase the Herdwick Stool in an installation that highlights a new way of working with wool, pairing it with one of Britain’s foremost designers of wooden furniture.
The team has exclusively created thirty stools combining a solid oak under-frame and legs of the award-winning Svelto stool. Each stool has been designed and handcrafted in ercol’s Buckinghamshire factory, with specially created tops by Solidwool made from a composite natural material: sheep’s wool. The installation will highlight how today’s designers are finding new materials that connect to British heritage.
Solidwool, a material pioneered by the young design duo Justin and Hannah Floyd, combines bio-resin with the fleece of Herdwick sheep to form an innovative new solid composite with an ethereal marbled pattern. The wool is sourced from Herdwick sheep, the iconic breed of the Lake District, whose wiry wool is very challenging to weave.
At the London Design Fair in September, Selvedge will showcase the result of this collaboration with an installation incorporating the Herdwick Stools alongside the story of the wool, the sheep, the low environmental manufacturing process and why the use of alternative materials should be encouraged.
