The British Quilt Study Group Bursary
Are you fascinated by the history and evolution of British patchwork and quilting? Are there questions about specific techniques, dyes, or styles that intrigue you? Perhaps you have a particular quilt or a unique style of quilting that you wish to explore in greater depth. Or maybe your interest lies in researching contemporary quilting practices.
The British Quilt Study Group (BQSG), a special interest group within The Quilters’ Guild, offers an annual seminar where research papers on these topics are presented. These papers are later published in the annual journal, Quilt Studies.
The BQSG is now inviting proposals for papers to be presented at the 2025 seminar, scheduled for September/October. If you have a research idea, this is your opportunity to contribute. At this stage, all that is required is a 500-word abstract outlining your proposed research. The BQSG Research Panel is available to support you in developing your ideas with suggestions and guidance.
For those concerned about the costs associated with research, BQSG offers an annual bursary of up to £500. This bursary can be used to cover expenses such as seminar attendance, travel and accommodation, childcare, copying and reproduction fees, or other costs related to your project.
To learn more about submitting an abstract or applying for the bursary, please email researchadmin_bqsg@quiltersguild.org.uk. The deadline for abstract submissions is 30 November 2024, with the possibility of later submissions being considered at the discretion of the Research Panel. Applications for the bursary must be submitted by 7 January 2025.
For those interested in exploring past research, copies of Quilt Studies from previous seminars are available for purchase at the Quilters’ Guild shop:
