510 Laundry
510 Laundry is a mother-and-son duo, Sue and Ed Simpson, united by their shared passion for vintage textiles and creative techniques.
Ed, based in Hackney, London, brings a background in art and homeware buying to the venture. Sue, residing in Portobello, Edinburgh, is an experienced quilter, patchwork, and crafter with a background in languages and archiving. The dialogue between their distinct locations and the fusion of their talents have shaped the unique approach to design and production at 510 Laundry.
Sourcing is conducted throughout the UK, with hand dyeing taking place in Edinburgh—an opportunity for Sue and Ed to collaborate closely.
Each piece they source is vintage and one-of-a-kind, carefully handcrafted and enriched with history. 510 Laundry’s mission is to reintroduce these items into contemporary use, adapting them to modern lifestyles.
They restore and reinterpret each piece with sensitivity, honouring its individual story. Their commitment to sustainability is evident in their use of reclaimed materials and natural dyes, including Indigo, Turmeric, Weld, and Madder. Any additional embellishments, such as beads, are reclaimed, and all vintage textiles are made from 100% natural fibers like cotton, linen, and silk.
A distinctive pink French knot adorns each item, referencing the laundry marks once used by households to identify their linens during cleaning. The name ‘510 Laundry’ is inspired by the first example of this tradition found in their collection.
