India, Vankar Vishram Valji Weaving, Gents Shawl Handwoven in Merino Wool
Gents Shawl handwoven in merino wool – 48” x 90” Design inspiration from traditional Rabari Turbansand Shawls.
The designs on traditional turbans and shawls are unique and core the identity of the weaves of Kutch. The borders of this shawl are centuries-old original designs of traditional shawls and turbans of Rabaris for centuries. The warp border has been made with an interlocking weave which is dicult as each yarn has to be carefully woven from both sides to form the unique pinnacle pattern. The weft border has a band that is weft-faced, where the warp is not visible at all. The rest of the border designs are intricately woven to create unique patterns.
It takes almost a month to make such a shawl, which is woven in 2 parts rst on a hand throw shuttle (unlike regular weaves which are done with y shuttle) and joined with hand-stitches by a Rabari woman who uses this the traditional technique for joining textiles.
