India, Vankar Vishram Valji Weaving, Stole Handwoven in Cotton Mulberry Silk
Stole handwoven in cotton+ mulberry silk – 24” x 80” – Design of a National Award-winning Masterpiece Shawl made earlier, converted toa, Stole.
The borders of this stole are inspired by a design that was used earlier for Ahir Men’s Blanket Shawls. The body of the stole has all over intricate designs symbolising the strength of the community network. The motifs are all diamond shapes – a cluster of diamonds woven in a zig-zag pattern.
The dyes used for extra weft are extracts of catechu, onion skins, neem leaves, acacia, while the warp and weft are in natural indigo, making the piece unique in all aspects.
Woven by 2 brothers Shamji (who received the National Award for the original shawl from which this design is inspired) and his brother Ramji during the lockdown period in Covid. It took almost 6 months to weave this piece either brother working full time on the loom.
