This incredible huipil has over 8 oz of rare ‘tixinda’ thread and is fit for a Mixtec Queen! The royal purple color of ‘tixinda’ is the cultural patrimony of the coastal Mixtec people and is lovingly milked from an endangered sea snail that lives along Oaxaca’s rocky coastline. Only 15 men alive on Earth, most over the age of 60, still risk their lives dodging the waves to practice this ancient art. It takes over 400 snails to dye one 4 oz. skein of cotton thread. If our conservation efforts are not successful, this ancient dye will disappear from the Earth, making your huipil even more valuable!
