Sunday 9 & Sunday 16 March 2025, Freehand English Paper Piecing with Catherine-Marie Longtin
14:00 - 17:00 GMT (Greenwich Mean Time)
Online workshop, hosted on Zoom by Catherine-Marie Longtin
Catherine-Marie Longtin is a Montreal-born French Canadian quilt-maker and textile artist living and working in South East London. She has been making quilts for ten years, displaying a quietly confident sense of colour with minimalist designs inspired by abstract art, architecture and interior design. She has recently taken on the possibilities offered by hand stitching, in particular by using the traditional English paper piecing technique that she combines with freehand drawings to create artworks. This technique allows for more organic shapes and can bring movement to traditional patterns like hexagons and snowball quilts.
Outline of the workshop
In this workshop, you will learn everything you need to create your own freehand English paper piecing (EPP) artwork, from drawing your design and choosing your fabrics to stitching your pieces together and finishing your work.
On the first day, Catherine-Marie will introduce the technique by showing you examples of freehand EPP, then discuss when it is the right technique to use, and which shapes lend themselves to EPP, and which don’t. She will guide you through drawing your own pattern, then teach you how to identify and cut the paper pieces before basting fabric onto them and hand-stitching them back together. You will then complete the patchwork on your own time before the second lesson.
The second day will cover various options for finishing and displaying your piece, from appliqué onto a background to stretching your patchwork onto a canvas frame. Catherine-Marie will then give you inspiration and advice about how to continue your exploration of freehand EPP and develop your own sense of colour.
